Native Plant Propagation Workshop

Lets get rooted!

Learn how to grow your own native plants from scratch — and why it’s one of the best things you can do for your farm, garden, and local ecosystem.

Native plants are naturally adapted to California’s soils, climate, and seasons. Once established, they support native wildlife, attract and house beneficial insects, and significantly reduce your landscape’s water needs. In this workshop, you’ll learn the hands-on skills to start multiplying them yourself.

What you’ll learn:

  • Propagation techniques including cuttings, layering, divisions, and seed starting
  • Stratification and scarification methods for seeds that need a little coaxing to germinate
  • How to identify, collect, and assess plant materials and seeds on a guided plant walk
  • Common propagation problems and diseases — and the nursery sanitation practices that prevent them

Who this is for:
Farmers, gardeners, and land stewards at any experience level who want to grow more native plants without buying every one from a nursery.
No prior experience required.

Patricia Carpenter has been growing California natives for over 20 years and has been propagating them from the very beginning, although she has often found natives to be a bit challenging.

Her Davis native garden on the slough has about 400 species/cultivars. Patricia tries to mimic nature and keep the wildness -but a controlled wild- that she has seen when hiking over much of the state.

As a CNPS Garden Ambassador she opens her native garden seasonally to visitors so they may enjoy the seasonal changes and also share what she has learned.

Rich Sonne moved to California from Central New York in 2020 and quickly fell in love with the state’s diverse landscapes and native flora. Exploring California’s parks and trails sparked a deep interest in native plants and sustainable landscaping.

Rich is a certified California Naturalist, UC Master Gardener, and Theodore Payne Foundation–accredited California Native Plant Landscaper. He is passionate about climate-appropriate, low-water gardens that support pollinators and create a strong sense of place. He regularly volunteers with Friends of West Pond in Davis and the SacValley CNPS Native Plant Nursery.
