SUMMARY:Seed Starting & Greenhouse Basics 2026
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on\, three-class course for beginning growers covering seed selection\, sowing\, watering\, light\, and greenhouse basics. Meet one Saturday per month to build skills from seed to transplant-ready plants. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nCourse Overview\n\nBeginning farmers will learn to confidently choose seeds\, sow properly\, manage water and light\, troubleshoot common issues\, and grow strong\, transplant-ready seedlings through hands-on practice in a supportive learning environment. \nDates:\nClass 1: February 21\, 1:30-4pm\nClass 2: March 14\, 1:30-4pm\nClass 3: April 11\, 1:30-4pm\n\nWhere: Center for Land-Based Learning\, 40140 Best Ranch Rd\, Woodland\, CA \nPrice: $195 \nQuestions? Email jon@landbasedlearning.org \n\n\n\n\nClass 1: From Seed to Sprout\nFebruary 21\, 1:30-4pm \n\nStart strong by learning how to choose the right seeds and set seedlings up for success from day one. Participants will explore different seed types\, including hybrid\, open-pollinated\, and heirloom varieties\, and learn how to read seed packets to understand germination time\, light needs\, and planting depth. The class covers what seeds need to germinate—water\, warmth\, air\, and light—as well as how to choose appropriate growing media and containers. \nThrough hands-on practice\, students will compare seed-starting mixes\, properly fill trays\, sow seeds at the correct depth\, label and track plantings\, and water newly sown trays correctly. By the end of the class\, participants will have a clear understanding of how early decisions affect seedling success and will leave with trays planted and growing. \n\n\n\n\n\nClass 2: Sprout to Seedling\nMarch 14\, 1:30-4pm \n\nGrow strong\, healthy seedlings by mastering light\, water\, and greenhouse management. Participants will learn seedling growth stages\, how to water correctly (bottom vs. overhead)\, and manage natural and supplemental light to prevent leggy plants. Hands-on activities include greenhouse walkthroughs\, using thermometers and hygrometers\, adjusting vents and airflow\, observing seedling health\, diagnosing common watering and light issues\, and practicing thinning seedlings. By the end of this session\, participants will understand how to nurture seedlings through the critical early growth stages and confidently troubleshoot common problems.\n\n\n\n\nClass 3: Seedling to Transplant\nApril 11\, 1:30-4pm \n\nPrepare seedlings for transplant success while preventing shock and promoting healthy root development. Participants will learn when and why to pot up\, select appropriate potting media and container sizes\, and harden off seedlings for outdoor planting. Hands-on practice includes potting up seedlings\, inspecting roots\, watering after transplanting\, setting up a hardening-off area\, and diagnosing real seedling problems through group troubleshooting. By the end of this class\, participants will be ready to confidently move their seedlings from trays to the garden or greenhouse\, equipped with practical skills to ensure strong\, resilient plants.

Throughout the course\, participants will engage in practical\, real-world experiences to build skill and confidence. Students will practice setting up and calibrating tractor implements\, develop hands-on tractor operation skills across multiple tractors\, and gain experience operating a BCS two-wheel tractor. \nWhen: Wednesdays\, April 22 – May 13\nTime: 5-8pm\nWhere: Center for Land-Based Learning\, 40140 Best Ranch Rd\, Woodland\, CA\nPrice: $270\n\n\n\n\nCourse Content\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Tractors and Safety Protocols\nSetting Up the Tractor and Implements\nTractor Operations\nTractors in the Field: Calibration and Best Practices\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\nJim Rumsey started driving tractors on the family’s farm when he was 11 years old. Seventy years later he is still driving tractors and teaching others to do the same. \nHe is an Agricultural Engineer by education and studied at UC Davis\, the University of Arizona and the University of Florida. His concentration at these institutions was in farm machinery development\, operation and management. \n\nDuring his career in private industry\, he was involved in monitoring efficient and proper use of farm machinery including vegetable harvesters and tree shakers. As an independent agricultural consultant\, he was involved in establishing processing tomato farming operations in Ohio and in Argentina. He made recommendations for acquisition of farm machinery for those operations. When returning to his family farm he personally performed all machinery operations involved in growing walnuts. This included all cultural practices such as spraying\, mowing\, and harvesting. At UC Davis he taught the famous “tractor driving class” and personally instructed over 4\,000 students in safe\, proper and efficient tractor and field equipment operation.\n\n\nWant More Information?\nContact us at @info@landbasedlearning.org
