Floral Design Workshop

Field to Vase

Every beautiful arrangement starts with a good cut, made at exactly the right moment.

In this hands-on workshop, flower farmer and florist Sarah Larkin will take you into the field to learn that timing firsthand. You’ll learn how to identify blooms at their ideal harvest stage, use proper cutting techniques, and condition flowers to maximize vase life.

After harvesting a selection of seasonal flowers, you’ll learn the core principles of floral design and build your own garden-inspired arrangement to take home.

This workshop emphasizes sustainable, seasonal floristry, with practical skills for home gardeners, beginning flower growers, and anyone drawn to creating beautiful arrangements from fresh, local flowers.

Meet Sarah Larkin

For over 20 years, Sarah has been bringing the beauty of fresh, locally grown flowers to the Yolo County community, crafting arrangements meant to inspire, uplift, and connect people to each other.

Sarah’s love for flowers took root while she was a delivery driver for Mengali’s Florist during her time at UC Davis. After graduating in 2004, she stayed on at Mengali’s to learn the craft of floral design before moving to Woodland, CA, where she began designing at K&M Floral in 2010.

When her son was born, Sarah found herself wanting something different from the traditional retail model — a business built around sustainability, creativity, and real connection with clients, with room to also be present for her son as he grew up. In 2019, that vision became Sarah Larkin Design, a boutique floral studio rooted in locally sourced, artful arrangements.

Sarah is also a 2024 graduate of our Beginning Farmer Training Program and in her second year with our Farm Business Incubator Program here at The Center for Land-Based Learning in Woodland, where she grows the flowers behind it all at Yolo Roots Flower Farm. Those same blooms carry through to Sarah Larkin Design — crop to creation, all under one roof.
