SUMMARY:September Speaker Series: Regenerative Ag: Practices\, Funding & Practical Tips
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Speaker Series is a fun way to connect with beginning farmers and anyone interested in agriculture and the environment. Each month\, we focus on a different topic\, highlighting some of the difference-makers in our region. Enjoy hot wood-fired pizzas\, cold drinks\, and great conversation on the third Wednesday of each month through October. \n4:30-5:30 p.m. – pizza\, drinks\, and networking \n5:30-7:00 p.m. – presentation and discussion \n7:00-7:30 p.m. – more mingling \nJoin us this month to learn about regenerative farming practices like planting hedgerows and rotating in cover crops to support soil health and farm biodiversity. We know these methods are beneficial\, but they do come at a financial cost. Fortunately\, funding is available from USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)! \nSara Lipschutz\, Soil Conservationist for NRCS joins us to demystify the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and how to apply for funding to finance improvements on your landscape. We’ll also hear from the Yolo Resource Conservation District and a local farmer about practical tips for implementation and maintenance. \nThis will be an interesting discussion for anyone interested in regenerative agriculture\, whether or not you have land! \nThis is a free event\, but a $20 donation to help support our work is appreciated. Donations are always welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Flower Farming Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Discover the fundamentals of growing high-quality cut flowers in this hands-on workshop with flower farmer Elle Huftill-Balzer of Sweet Mabel’s Farm. \nDesigned for beginning flower farmers\, market gardeners\, and backyard growers\, this class combines classroom instruction with guided field demonstrations to explore the complete lifecycle of cut flower production. \nParticipants will learn how to select and grow flowers for continuous seasonal harvests using techniques tailored to the Sacramento Valley’s unique climate\, where flowers can be grown nearly year-round. While out in the field\, participants will practice evaluating crop health\, identifying harvest-ready blooms\, learning proper harvesting techniques\, and observing production practices such as plant spacing\, support systems\, and succession planting. \nThe workshop concludes with post-harvest handling and vase life strategies that help growers deliver longer-lasting\, higher-quality flowers from field to customer.
