Yolo County SLEWS Mentor Training Day

October 9 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

The SLEWS Program is hosting our annual mentor training day on October 9th. Together with our restoration partners, we will be training our SLEWS mentors on approaches to working with high school students and essential restoration skills such as installing irrigation, planting, and mulching. Agenda:

9:00 Arrival
● Sign-in & grab breakfast

9:15 Welcome & Introductions – Lead by CLBL and Yolo RCD
● Start with a traditional opening circle/Land Acknowledgement (& Thanks for Yocha Dehe)—Sydney & Sabreena
● Brief introductions from all partners in attendance—Sydney
● Icebreaker activity—Lucero

9:45 Interpreting the FD Plan and Working with HS Students – Led by CLBL
● Field day plan and attachments – When in advance of the field days, mentors should expect to see this and invitation to provide input if desired—Allie
● General approaches to working with youth—Sabreena
○ What has worked for mentors in the past, discussion
○ Dealing with challenging situations, provide examples
● Closing Question: What excites you about working with HS students? discussion—Sydney

10:15 Field Day Restoration Logistics – Led by Yolo RCD
● Tool Safety/General Safety
● Native Plant ID
● Proper Planting Techniques

10:30 Split into Groups and Plant! – Led by Yolo RCD

11:45 Closing Circle —Sydney
