Program Overview

The Beginning Farmer Training Program provides active and aspiring farmers a strong foundation from which to launch and grow their farm businesses. In this immersive educational program, students have the opportunity to gain farm production and business knowledge in a variety of settings that appeal to different learning styles. By choosing which courses they need they can tailor the next phase of their education, ensuring that the next generation of motivated, hard-working farm entrepreneurs gains the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work towards their farming goals.

Beginning Farmer Training

Classes & Curriculum

Curriculum combines lectures by farmers and agricultural professionals, hands-on field experience, and farm visits to expose students to topics critical for a future in farming.

Some courses are offered online for remote learning, while others are fully in-person. All in-person classes will be held at the Center for Land-Based Learning Headquarters at The Maples Farm in Woodland, CA, unless otherwise noted.

All classes are designed for adults, 18 and over.

Welding 101

Learn the fundamentals of welding in this hands-on Welding 101 course. Over four weeks, students will gain experience with oxy-acetylene torches and arc welding, practicing essential techniques in a small-class setting for personalized instruction.

The Center for Land-Based Learning offers hands-on Welding 101 classes in a newly remodeled welding shop at our headquarters in Woodland. Classes are 2-hour sessions, two evenings per week for four weeks.

Whether you’re a farmer who wants to practice the basics of welding, brush up on your skills, or learn to weld for home or business, we are proud to make this community resource available. You’ll get experience using an arc welder and an oxy-acetylene torch. Small class size allows ample opportunity for personalized learning and instruction.

The first 4 classes we focus on setting up and safely using an oxy/acetylene torch. Students will learn how to weld and cut steel using the torch, practicing a flat weld, fusion weld, but joint and lap joint.

Classes 5-8 will cover arc welding. Students will learn to use two different welding rods and their applications on 4 different welding positions: flat weld, butt joint, lap joint and T-joint.

Safety and technique will be emphasized in each class, and students will learn which application and tool to use for a variety of different tasks. We will also discuss what to look for when shopping for new or used equipment.

Instructor George Kimball grew up on a small farm in Yolo County and fell in love with the art of welding while in high school. After he graduated, he worked for Kimzey’s Welding Works in Woodland, and then became a professional farrier for a decade.

Students must be 18 or over.
Space is limited to 5 students per class.

This comprehensive four-week program is designed for new tractor operators and those seeking a refresher on safe and effective tractor operation. Throughout the course, participants will engage in practical, real-world experiences that enhance their learning and confidence.

  • Introduction to the history, types, uses and components of tractors.
  • Safety protocols, including hands-on inspections and a practical safety training session.
  • Setting up the tractor and attachment of implements.
  • Practical exercises to ensure that students can safely and effectively prepare equipment for use.
  • Hands-on experience operating tractors and implements in various field scenarios, including the use of grain drills.
  • Learn to drive and use best practices for field operations.
  • Focus on calibration techniques for accurate planting.

This 8-week intro to irrigation course will build practical, field-based irrigation skills. The course combines live, online instruction with on-farm lab work to reinforce learning through hands-on application.

Participants will explore California water infrastructure and policy, climate and soil considerations, irrigation system design and components, installation and maintenance practices, and irrigation scheduling. By the end of the course, participants will be able to evaluate site conditions, design and assess low-volume irrigation systems, conduct system testing, and determine when, how much, and how long to irrigate for specific crops and farm contexts.

This class will be offered as a small cohort to ensure personalized instruction and hands-on learning.

Enrollment requirements:

  • Access to a working laptop/device with a camera
  • Access to working farm land for on-farm lab assignments (please connect with CLBL staff if this is a barrier)
  • Ability to contribute aprox. 6 hours a week to lectures + homework/lab assignments

This 4-week course is designed to equip farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs with essential marketing skills to grow their businesses and reach new customers. Participants will explore the fundamentals of marketing with a focus on practical strategies tailored to the agricultural industry.

Topics include branding, customer recognition, digital marketing, and product display, with an emphasis on modern marketing techniques such as social media outreach. Additionally, the course will cover the importance of product labels, farm-to-table storytelling, and how to position products to stand out in competitive markets.

By the end of the course, participants will have actionable tools and knowledge to effectively promote their farm products, enhance customer loyalty, and drive sales. This course is ideal for farmers, market vendors, and small-scale producers looking to enhance their marketing skills and grow their customer base.

Welding 201

We will pick up with what we learned in Welding 101. In order to take 201, you must have completed our Welding 101 Workshop.

In this class we will focus on arc welding and the oxy/acetylene cutting torch. Students will practice welding with 6011 and 7018 rods. Practice will include welding 3 pass t-joints, lap joints, butt joints and pipe in the flat position and vertical position. There will be two projects to complete combining the use of the arc welder, the cutting torch, drill press and hand grinder. Along with these projects there will be an introduction to brazing and soldering as time allows.

Class will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. No class Thursday, December 25.

An informative webinar led by industry experts is followed by three hands-on field days where we will learn about all stages of cultivation from planting to harvest. Designed for anyone interested in agave farming, distilling, or exploring opportunities in California’s growing agave industry.
